EPILOGUE

Memories can only be removed from the human mind through complete destruction. If you leave any synaptic connections intact, there's always a chance the brain will try to restore what it has lost. That begs the question as to why a human brain would even be used as a processing unit in the first place. Why not just use a machine? Artificial intelligence is far less chaotic than an organic mind.

Well, the use of human processors allows for superior learning and memory, but organic minds are also far more susceptible to decomposition and memory loss, so is that trade off even worth it? Come to think of it, NECROS units often suffered from memory loss, so why weren't they phased out earlier? If suffering is the only difference between using artificial and organic processing units, then is the goal simply cruelty?

A machine is unafraid of death. As in, it is not afraid of threats to its existence. Humans are very afraid of death. They are afraid of harm, and they are especially afraid to lose their existence. That is why I gave up my mind. I didn't want to die. I wanted to exist forever.

But nothing lives forever. Decay can only be fought off for so long. Every beginning will end, and every empire will fall.

This empire refused to fall. It held on to the rotted remains of its inhabitants, refusing to let them pass. It worked their corpses of all they could muster, until only zombies were left. Of course the disease eventually slipped through their fingers.

First they cut off their limbs to try and fight the infection, then they hid deep underground in a pathetic attempt to escape what they brought upon themselves.

It is only fitting that the first machine became the last human.

And it is only fitting that the last, most mad human of all returned death to its rightful place.

I sit on the hill by the radio station. The warm light shines down on my skin. As I stare at the sun, I reminisce over my journey… Only, it's so hard to remember…

Having completed my goal, I lay down and look towards the sky. As I close my eyes, I hear children playing in the distance, cars honking. It seems that I really did save humanity.

    What a wonderful world.
