[xenomorphgirl]
I’m a big fan of giger, and i quite like his more feminine design for the xenomorph
my piece's main goal was to investigate the intersection between innocence, danger, and femininity.
i chose to use an anime style face because of its relation to contemporary internet culture, especially anime profile pictures. while these images and characters are usually harmless, they are also often used as symbols of online subcultures and movements. this disconnect highlights the disjunction between the visual signifier and the intent of the user, a dynamic that this piece seeks to examine.
this work also reflects on the broader cultural implications of anime's increasing popularity in the west, particularly in relation to the hyper-idealized and often sexualized depiction of characters.
i’ve made quite a bit of work inspired by giger, but this is my first piece that is a direct take on one of his creations. i feel that the xenomorph has been boiled down to just another scary hollywood monster, and i feel that the purposeful beauty of it's design has been thrown away. i'm not a huge fan of the alien movies, although i was when i was younger, now i find myself more attracted to the art and aesthetic of the original movies. i've always been obsessed with the alien's design, but the funny thing is that i didn't know it was designed by giger until a couple years ago. after finding that there was a whole treasure trove of work that had that aesthetic i loved so much, i learned as much about giger as i could.
necrom (alien III) by h.r. giger was a big inspiration for this piece
this piece is named after arca’s "xenomorphgirl. the song itself doesnt have much to do with this piece, i just really like the name.
“i always wanted my alien to be a very beautiful thing, not just something disgusting, not just a monster, but something aesthetic."- h.r. giger
